Tulips have gotten a bad rap…. April 24, 2013

People give tulips a bad rap, that they don’t last long. Well, here are three vases: on the right are the ones we got in yesterday, notice the yellow ones leaning over. They were laying in a box and tried to pick up their little heads.

The ones in the middle are from last Monday. They were cut a bit shorter and are still perky.

The ones on the left are from two weeks ago. See how they are very open? They open like this as they mature and then drop their petals.

Thought you would like to know!

New goals about productivity or taking care of yourself? January 4, 2013

As we start a new year, many set goals, make resolutions, or select a word for the year to focus themselves. My word of the year: Leader. I am already turning the corner in leading my team differently and not just working ‘in’ the business. It feels great, and I’m getting good feedback.  I hope you are excited about this year and all it offers. I would love to hear what heart-changes you are experiencing, either on Facebook, Twitter, or here in the comments. It’s so great to encourage each other!

Many goals fall into two broader categories: effectiveness and personal care. We want to do better and be better. Take care of ourselves better, and take care of what’s within our responsibility. Finding support for continuing with our goals, and finding resources that make meeting our goals easier is one of the finest delights! Synergy in life is wonderful.

Flowers help morning moods.

Productive and Happy at Work

Even though I work with flowers all the time, I am still delighted and caught by surprise by how the sight of them makes me feel!

Florists are often the worst when it comes to actually enjoying the flowers ourselves – we think, ‘well, someone might want to buy them.’Or we just forget in the long lists of tasks to take care of.

One of my own new year’s resolutions is to have a single, amazing bloom on my desk all the time. I am worth it! And in this one, I am happy to apply my word of the year and lead by example. So feel free to ask my any time what flower is on my desk…

Finding Inspiration January 2, 2013

I have had a wonderful week with family in snowy West Virginia, and enjoyed re-connecting with three points of inspiration in my life. Thought I would share them with you:

image

1. This picture of garden roses – I was sharing pictures on my phone with my Mom, and as I came across the garden roses, I was reminded of why I do why I do: because flowers are so amazing! And I love the new varieties!

image

2. Trees and branches: Some people think they ate sticks, that they look dead. I love the endless shapes and forms that branches take as they grow. And seeing them in winter without leaves and with snow highlighting them is wonderful!

3. My 2-year old nephew! The warm, open heart of a child, so accepting, so curious and eager to learn is heart-changing.

So my next question to myself is: how do I get more of each in my life?

What inspires you, and what are you going to do to get more?

The story behind the flowers September 19, 2012

The event: Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce networking event
The venue: the new Cityscape Hotel Palomar
The Palomar has a clean, modern aesthetic, and their overall design theme is ‘Art in Motion’

Centerpieces were requested for low cocktail tables with black linens.
Here are the pieces we created, 10 tables requested, and inky 8 were set up, so they also got podium flowers and registration flowers!

The stories behind today’s custom bouquets! August 29, 2012

So he calls in, she is headed to Hawaii, he is a friend and wants to ‘pop in’ and wish her a good trip. She likes mums, and is earthy.

Here is the arrangement she is receiving today:

Another story:

Mom calls us, it’s her daughter’s birthday. The daughter works for a cement artist, and loves tulips. Tulips are a bit tough to get this time of year, so fortunately she calls ahead and we can order them and get them in. She wants something artistic and creative. She saw our ‘Sculptural Joy’ arrangement, and asked if we could create it in tulips. We agreed on a budget and this is what we are delivering today:

So fun to provide creative Floral Art!

Budgeting and Deposits for Wedding Flowers August 25, 2012

BouquetsYou’ve had your consultation.

You know what flowers you want.

You know how and when to order them.

But how much should you expect to spend and when should you have your deposits in?

Right now the current national industry standard is to budget about 8-15% of the entire wedding budget for flowers (all expenses, not just the venue).  With that said, let’s touch on price fluctuations with flowers as you will need to adjust your budget or your order based on this information.

Some flowers have steady pricing throughout the year, and other flower prices can fluctuate from 30-40%, up to 50-200%. For example: Red roses at Valentine’s day (high demand, but not the prime growing season for roses) can run 2-3 times what they are the rest of the year.  Mother’s Day weddings also will see a premium upgrade for the floral designs and delivery services.

Peonies out-of-season are typically at least twice as expensive. Also, when thinking about flowers that are in season, remember that it depends on the growing season, not colors for the season. For example, in the fall, orange roses and almost anything else orange is actually a higher price because there is so much demand. On the other hand, tulips are very plentiful in the spring and prices come down significantly.

Remember that there are some seasons during the year where specific flowers either just aren’t available or are very, very pricey and must be pre-ordered well in advance.bridesmaid bouquet For example, tulips in July, August, or September are available in a limited supply and are much more expensive. Daffodils are just not available at all except a short season in the winter and early spring, at least here in Phoenix.

Also, where you are located in the country greatly affects availability and cost as well. If you are closer to the area where your favorite flower is grown, the prices will be better. And as is typical with our other selections, we always seem to want the exotic for our area – for example, hydrangeas can be seen as a very common flower in the Northeast or Midwest where it grows in many gardens. Here in Phoenix, it is in high demand because we never see it in the landscape.

It is common for most florists to ask for one-quarter to one-half of the price as a deposit.  At God’s Garden Treasures we require one-third of the complete package for the full deposit. We also offer a hold-the-date deposit for brides who know they want to use us and still are working to make final decisions about their package style. This allows us to release all the information and photos we have gathered, so that they can utilize this in their final decision-making.

Planning a wedding can be stressful for brides, fiancés, and family members. Let use help take away some of that stress and provide you with quality flowers and outstanding customer service. Call us today to schedule your wedding flower consultation.
